Rev. Dr. Stephen M. Cady II brings deep experience at the intersection of theology, culture, and young adult formation. A practical theologian, pastor, and educator, Dr. Cady has spent over two decades serving local congregations while remaining closely engaged in academic and public life.
Prior to joining Brite Divinity School as Associate Professor of Youth, Theology, and Culture, Dr. Cady served for twelve years as Senior Minister of Asbury First United Methodist Church in Rochester, New York, a large Reconciling Congregation known for its commitment to outreach, social justice, and inclusion. During his tenure, he led significant community-based initiatives, including the development of a comprehensive outreach center serving the region’s most vulnerable neighbors, while guiding sustained anti-racism and LGBTQ inclusion efforts within congregational life.
Dr. Cady earned his Ph.D. in Practical Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his research explored how the theology of Howard Thurman intersects with the worship practices and spiritual formation of youth and young adults. His scholarship and ministry consistently focus on how faith is shaped through story, spiritual practice, and life within Christian community during emerging adulthood.
A frequent speaker and teacher, Dr. Cady has lectured and preached nationally and internationally, and has been recognized for his leadership through multiple fellowships and awards, including the Denman Award for Evangelism and induction into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College. His work reflects a sustained commitment to faithful discipleship, cultural engagement, and the formation of young adults in an increasingly complex world.
